Building and development

As a Conservation Village, we would ask you to please consider the joys of a garden surrounding your new home.

Building or renovating your house is something that needs to be undertaken with much care and endless respect for your neighbours. Build with the mountain, the fynbos, and the village in your heart and in your mind. As far as possible, try to think eco-friendly, water-wise & renewable energy.

Try to keep building noise to a minimum on a Saturday. There are City regulations that prohibit ALL building noise on  Saturday evenings and the whole of Sundays.

Local architects and architectural guidelines

Contact scarboroughmail@gmail.com for a list of current local architects that could assist you with your build or renovation.

Safety and security measures:

Please ensure for the general safety within the village and for your own peace of mind that your building contractor is licensed with the NHBRC (National Home Builders Registration Council) and that ID records of all labourers working on the site are kept by the contractor.

Important:

Abiding by the City’s Building By-Laws and only building with approved plans is a pre-requisite for any renovation or new build in the village.

This list will be available in the near future.

We encourage everyone to consider indigenous wild gardens with lots of trees.

Here is an interesting read from the BBC:

How to turn your garden into a carbon sink

From patches of wilderness to decomposing plants, turning your garden into a carbon sink isn’t just about adding lots of trees.

The thing about leaf blowers

Other gardening tools are just as polluting as mowers. According to CARB, 'using a petrol-powered leaf blower produces the same amount of emissions as a 1,770km (1,100 mile) car journey – the distance from Los Angeles to Denver.'
