Pets
Important note from the Noordhoek Veterinary Clinic:
SNAKE BITE NOTE
We are ( hopefully) heading into hot weather and the snakes will be out and about.
If your pet is bitten by a puff adder or a cobra, it is important to know that treatment with antivenom is really EXPENSIVE.
The antivenom is now approx R3800 per vial!
For puff adder bites, we usually need 3 to 4 vials.
For cobra bites, we use 4 to 6 vials!
So you are looking at a cost of between (approximately ) R11000 and R22000 , for the antivenom only . This is excluding any other veterinary treatment, hospitalisation, and in bad cases, even ventilator costs.
Perhaps if you live or walk on the mountainside or elsewhere in snaky habitat, it might be worth putting your dogs onto a medical aid plan that covers snake bite incidents.
Your vet may well ask for a deposit towards this expensive treatment, on admittance to hospital.
Meantime, be watchful but do continue to enjoy the outdoors!

Dogs
Please make sure that your dog(s) are under your control at all times.
DO
Have a collar or harness on your dog at all times, and carry a leash ready at hand to contain your dog when necessary.
Give the right of way to people unaccompanied by dogs, and be sensitive to others.
Leash your dog within 50 metres from, and passing through, the designated parking areas.
Have some form of identification on your dogs, such as a tag with your name and contact number. Microchip your dog.
DO NOT
Allow your dog to chase, injure or kill any wildlife.
Allow your dog to interact with strangers unless they have indicated that it is okay.
Allow your dog to wander ahead where you cannot see them.
Allow your dog off leash if it is known to be aggressive or unpredictable.
Allow your unleased dog to approach leashed dogs unless the owner indicates that it is fine for them to do so.
Please be mindful that Schusterskraal and Scarborough Beach fall under Table Mountain National Park. The EMP for walking dogs in Table Mountain National Park applies:
In accordance with by-laws (https://openbylaws.org.za/za-cpt/act/by-law/2021/animal-keeping/eng/), your dog may not wander around and become a nuisance to other residents or wildlife. Please ensure that your property is adequately fenced to prevent your dog from escaping.
Please ensure that your dogs do not bark for extended periods of time. Consider leaving your dogs indoors when you are out for the evening or for periods during the day - this is beneficial for their safety (it also avoids run-ins with baboons and snakes), for the security of your home (dogs cannot simply be let out the property by burglars and trespassers if they are locked indoors), and to reduce barking during quiet times. Most dogs will sleep when left indoors.
If your dog barks incessantly, please contact a registered dog behaviour professional for advice on preventing distress or boredom when they are left alone.
If you have an issue with dogs in Scarborough, try to deal directly with the owner.
However, if you have reached a deadlock, reports can be made to Law Enforcement, and the SVA, TT Dog Issues: dogsofscarborough@gmail.com.
Cats
It is a good idea for cats to wear a collar with a name tag and a small bell to protect our rich and varied reptile- and birdlife.
If possible, keep cats in after dusk to prevent them from hunting at night and for their safety.
Biodegradable poo packets
Take biodegradable poo packets when walking your dog. Remove your dog's poo from beaches, paths, car parks, and any other areas used by pedestrians. Deposit the contents either into our dog poo worm bin at the beach, the trash bins, or take it home with you to flush down the loo, or bury it in your garden.
Please do not deposit dog poop in the OCEAN PLASTICS BINS at the beach. Let's keep it clean!

Pufferfish alert
Dog walkers, please be careful, They haven't been around for a while, but they are dangerous for your dog. If your dog does eat one, you need to make them vomit as soon as possible, even before you head to the vet. Make a small ball of damp washing powder and force it down your dog's throat. They will throw up immediately. Some useful info on the WikiHow.pet website.
